Amari Midnight Run 2012 Winner
The Amari Midnight Charity Run 2013 in central Bangkok is coming up this weekend. Run Thailand got ahold of the charismatic winner of the Amari Midnight Run 2012, Bryan Marotta. He is an American runner who has great experience of living and running in and around Thailand. Bryan doesn’t only have fast legs, even his speech keeps a quick cadence. Whether it’s running or chatting, once he gets going – it’s hard to stop him!
Congrats on last year’s Midnight Run win! What’s your strongest memory from 2012’s race?
Thanks Henrik! Well, like always it’s the usual Bangkok chaos that I remember most!
What makes the Midnight run special?
The midnight run takes on a character of its own each and every year, the lights, taxis, party life, etc. You can’t stop them, so you just have to go with the flow!
What’s the differences of running in the middle of the night compared to run in the morning like most other races in Thailand?
In the morning you hear birds, which is nice. At midnight you hear car screeches! Just gotta be sure to run hard enough so it doesn’t swallow you up. Its very much like an obstacle course!
How’s your running form this year? Will you be able to defend your title?
Well, I Just got back from filming a mini-documentary about Kenyans training in Thailand, so training has started to pick up a bit! As for defending my title, well Henrik, I think we both know you’re the guy to hang with… 55! Fortunately, we know each other well enough to have fun out there on the race course and give it our best!
You know the Thai running scene better than most, what other races in Thailand would you recommend?
After all these years of racing in Thailand I have to say i can’t recommend just one race. I like racing outside of Bangkok by turning a Sunday race into a long weekend getaway! I’d say, pick a race somewhere you’ve never traveled to, grab some friends and turn it into an adventure!
Based in Bangkok, where is your favorite place to train?
When in Bangkok I enjoy training on my home court here at Rangsit University. It’s a dirt track and I’ve ran most my mileage here so it’s where I feel most comfortable. When I get a chance to train outside of Bangkok I really enjoy running with friends in Surat Thani, it’s a great vibe down there!
Lastly, anything you want to say to the Thai running community out there?
For all the Thai runners out there I just want to say keep up the good spirit, run for fun, invite friends and family to join you on some runs, a healthy family is a happy family! Running is a great way to bring people together. See you all at the starting line!
Good going Bryan. Would you know how to go about finding trail races in Thailand that I could get to? I live in Krabi, so pretty far south, but there must be a website in Thai or English which would tell me where the major races are.
Thanks for any tips. Cheers man, Vern
Hey Vern, sorry for the late response! Trail races are slow but up and coming here in asia! I’d follow along online and id say you sign up to meetup.com to see what others there are talking about. If something comes up ill try getting a hold of you! Bryan
Ok, will sign up to meetup.com. You can find my email at crank101.com or goupit.com. Cheers man.
Good job !! Hope you all the best ^^
